Time to try our Bánh mì

The history of Bánh mì, a Vietnamese sandwich, is a story of cultural exchange and adaptation:

  • French introduction

In the 1860s, the French introduced baguettes and other baked goods to Vietnam. The word bánh mì, which means "bread", was used in Vietnamese as early as the 1830s.

  • Local adaptation

Vietnamese people adapted the French ingredients to suit their own tastes. For example, they substituted cheese and butter with mayonnaise and pâté, and used fresh herbs and pickled vegetables.

  • Banh mi creation

In the late 1950s, Mr. and Mrs. Le in Ho Chi Minh City created the modern banh mi by putting Vietnamese ingredients directly inside the French baguette.

  • International acclaim

Bánh mì gained international acclaim and became synonymous with the sandwich we know today.
